Making Decisions Part 2
05/08/2015This week I want to give you a simple, no-tech, no-cost approach to use when you have a decision to make.
For most of us there comes a time when we struggle to make a decision. Sometimes these are small decisions and sometimes they are big (and many small ones we make BIG in our minds.)
Either way making a decision can be excruciating as we vacillate and spin and work ourselves into a tizzy (aka analysis paralysis) not knowing what to do.
Before we know it we are just like Alice falling down the rabbit hole – except we are not as calm and collected as she is!
Two important things to remember when deciding between options:
1. Making a decision generally requires that we CHANGE something in our life – and most people simply don’t like changes. Our minds are hard-wired to prefer the status quo.
2. Our minds focus and hold onto what we will LOSE with the change, not allowing the ideas, possibilities and new beginnings to take center stage.
When faced with two paths and you are not sure which one to take try this…to take the trauma (& drama) out of your decisions and therein simplify your life…
Write 4 lists:
1) Everything you enjoy / like about point A.
2) The things you don’t like / enjoy about point A.
3) What you would miss if you were no longer associated with point A.
Now – here is the key piece:
Your 4th list is to identify how you can RECREATE those things from #3 in your life, outside of Point A.
This is where the shift occurs. Instead of focusing on what you will lose by making the change, your mind shifts to thinking about resources that you have available to you to draw from, to expand and to create. The end result is that you can experience the change not as a victim, but as a driver of it. There is so much more fun energy in the possibilities.
Are you trying to make some decisions in your life? Try the exercise and let me know what you think.
