How the Academy Awards Changed my Life

And I’m talking about the Academy Awards a year ago – 2014. I rarely watch them and for some reason (it was meant to be) tuned to them that night. I was home alone, just doing things around the house so kept the television on the whole evening. I was interested in the Best Actor award because Matthew McConaughey was nominated and he is, after all, a Texan. I didn’t see the movie Dallas Buyers Club, but I was living in Dallas at the time the film was set so I felt a small connection to his nomination. He did win the award and I am so glad I stayed up for the moment and to hear his acceptance speech. It changed my life. Do you know what he said?

He said every day he needs 3 things:

1) Someone to look up to
2) Something to look forward to
3) Something to chase

This gave me pause. Something to chase. Wow.

I realized that I had two out of the three in my life but I needed and wanted the third. For all of us (not just the male gender) there is the thrill of the chase.

I’ve created a simple worksheet for you to print if you’d like to have a place to “noodle” and think and write your own answers to these three questions. Who do you look up to? Do you have something regularly to look forward to? And….is it time for you to chase something?  Something that gets all of your creative energies flowing and makes you wake up easier in the a.m. and look forward to the next day because there is more to

ponder and plan

and strategize and create

and build and learn

and stretch and grow

and falter and wonder

if you are cut out for this

and there is a BIG YES in your heart because you are called to this.

Think about it ~ the thrill of the chase.  Here’s to the joy of making it happen!

Ps. Me? After hearing that fateful speech I began to put in motion specific plans to leave my job of 10.5 years to focus exclusively on my own business.

A big step? You bet.

Intimidating? A little.

Thrilling? Absolutely.

Very thought provoking and intimidating at the same time! Hard to change ones life when we are comfortable where we are…or at least not uncomfortable enough to do anything about it. Looking forward to printing of the work sheet!

Hey there Jess, if you read the previous post you’ll see I’m just now figuring how the whole posting / reply process…thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes, while comfortable is good it can certainly get in the way of challenging yourself. Hope you found “noodling” on the worksheet helpful…Happy to talk more about this at any time! G

Fantastic post Gigi! What wise words from Mr. McConaughey. This really got me brainstorming and dreaming.

I especially love the “something to chase” comment. We have to stay hungry, as they say.

It’s so often I see these thought-provoking posts around the new year, this was the perfect timing for me to get my goals back on track!

Thanks for all that you do,
    L. Gillette

hi Liz, I’m so glad the timing was right for you on this one. All too often we can get in the hum-drum of the daily and forget about the great energy “something to chase” can bring! Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it. Stay tuned :), Gigi
